‘Everything is possible’. That’s the opinion of Liverpools eccentric leader Jurgen Klopp, who’s bouncing optimism is what Liverpool fans have been preaching about for the last 27 years (and counting). He has the red half of merseyside hanging on his every word and the fans will only be enthused by last seasons brief flirt with success. Had Liverpool triumphed in either of their cup finals last season then we may be less inclined to believe him. As whilst temporarily robbing the Anfield faithful of some of those magical European nights, last time they were without foreign competition they came within a Steven Gerrard slip of ending their long wait for a league title. So can they win it? Well, recent history doesn’t count in their favour. They had more success with those white suits in ’96 than they’ve had in the last decade. Ideas of going the whole way are not too far fetched, but defensive frailties may still loom large. The erratic Alberto Moreno has left many armchair fans wondering whether they could do a job at left back had they not slipped through the net; whilst pulses raise whenever goalkeeper Simon Mignolet is near the ball. Capable of dismantling the best with their high pressing style, yet equally capable of throwing games away to the lesser sides; life under Klopp promises to be one hell of an achterbahn……that’s German for rollercoaster.
